This week, NTEU filed comments opposing the Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM) proposals to strip federal workers of their right to appeal two types of firings to the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB): suitability actions and reductions in force (RIFs). The new proposals would force employees to go to OPM instead of the MSPB to challenge these types of actions. Even worse, both proposals would also remove employees’ right to appeal further to a federal court.
NTEU opposes OPM’s wrongful attempts to grab more power for itself. Suitability and RIF appeals belong before a neutral body like the MSPB, not a federal agency dedicated to carrying out the Administration’s agenda like OPM. OPM claims that it is “streamlining” appeals, but the result will be a less fair process for federal employees.
We will continue to update you as we fight back against OPM’s attempts to give itself more power at the expense of federal employees’ rights.
