After a brief government shutdown, the president signed into law a bipartisan budget deal for the remainder of this fiscal year and 2019.
Here are five things federal employees need to know about the bill:
-
The measure does not target federal employee compensation or benefits as a way to offset the increase in spending.
-
For both fiscal years 2018 and 2019, the bill would provide relief from sequestration by raising the overall spending caps for defense and non-defense programs. The union supported increasing caps on non-defense spending to allow more funding for NTEU-represented agencies.
-
Another NTEU-supported provision provides $4 billion to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
-
While the bill does not include any additional funding for the IRS, Senate leaders have made a commitment to working with the appropriations committees to provide increased funding for the agency.
-
The agreement provides short-term funding to federal agencies through March 23, allowing appropriators to work on final funding bills for the remainder of this fiscal year.
